It’s December, the schools have closed and your children and you have time to re-charge your batteries and spent quality time together. I want us to discuss the importance and the impact of reading on your child’s success in life. You can be proactive and use the next couple of weeks to establish a reading habit that can make an enormous difference in your child’s future achievement at school and in life.

I would like us to take some time out and discuss practical ways to develop your child’s self-esteem and confidence. The important values that you must value and internalise are care, dignity and participation because these values should drive your choices, behaviours and ability to proactively support your child so that she is able to assert herself in a mindful manner.

It all starts with you, be a good role model:

Let us start by looking at some benefits of reading:

• Reading develops the mind as the brain is a muscle which needs to exercise.  Watching TV does not achieve this. 
• Books help children to develop important languageskills.  Reading out aloud assist children with grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.   
• Books open doors to any subject, person and place anywhere in the world.  Your child’s knowledge and understanding will grow and develop immensely.
• Mystery novels also give children the opportunity to apply critical thinking and problem-solvingskills.  
• Reading can provide children with many hours of fun and entertainment as stories free up imaginations and allow children to dream.   These as so important for creative problem-solving and creativity.    
• Reading a story to your child develop their listening and concentration skills.  A child’s ability to learn at school is dependent on these skills.

Here’s what you can do to assist your child:

• Let your child read to you everyday for a few minutes. Start off with 5 minutes for a Grade R child and increase the time based on their age and level.  Your grade R child can use the pictures to ‘read’ the story to you. 
• Make sure that your time spent together is pleasurable – therefore choose the right time such as just before your child goes to bed at night.  
• Select stories and books that will have a positive influence on your child and sensitize them to the needs of other people and things.    
• Encourage your older child to read out aloud to younger ones to improve their relationship.  
• Don’t be concerned if your child wants to hear the same story over and over again because the familiarity and predictability may be comforting for her.  Re-read old favorites and at the same time introduce new stories.  
• Use all the resources that are available to you such as printed books, magazines, online books and more.  Encourage your child to take great care of the resources as well.    
• Follow-up the reading by asking your child to reflect on what they have read or heard.  Some questions to ask are:  ‘What have you enjoyed most about the story?’;  ‘What have you learnt or realized?’;  ‘If you could change the ending, what would your ending be?’.    
• Read the PiP stories in the Reader to your child as it teaches important lessons and morals.  

I trust that you will be pro-active and utilize this time to make a significant contribution towards your child’s reading and your relationship.  May you festive season be a blessed and joyous one!
